President Garcia closes 9th International Gold Symposium

Lima, May 20 (ANDINA). Peruvian President Alan Garcia Perez on Thursday afternoon attended the closing ceremony of the Ninth International Gold Symposium, a three-day event which aimed to strengthen Peru's position as an investment and business hub in the region.

The Gold Symposium, held in Lima from May 18 to 20, was attended by hundreds of business people in the mining, trade, industry, technology and telecommunications sectors.

Representatives of financial institutions, government agencies, trade associations, consulting firms and law firms were also present at the event which aimed to promote and encourage new investment and business opportunities in Peru and all Latin America.

Among topics discussed were "Applications in Industry and Medicine", "South African Vision to create New Industrial Uses of Gold", "Silver Industrial Markets," "High Tech in Gold for Optical Applications" and "Applications in Art and Culture."

In 2009, Peru's total exports amounted to 26.88 billion dollars, of which mining exports accounted for 60.9 percent, totaling 16.36 billion dollars. Gold exports amounted to 6.8 billion dollars.

Peru maintains an important position among gold and silver producers in Latin America and the world. Peru is first worldwide in silver production and ranks sixth in gold according to 2009 Gold Field Mineral Services Report.
