ANDINA. Cusco and other cities selected as American Capitals of Culture in the first decade of the 21st century are being promoted in 19 Ibero-American countries by the Spanish TV channel Antena 3 Internacional.

The Imperial city of Cusco in southern Peru, selected as American Capital of Culture in 2007, is included in the advertising spots, said the President of the International Bureau of Cultural Capitals, Xavier Tudela.

The TV spot is airing in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, the U.S. (New York, Kansas, Miami), Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay and Peru.

The American Capital of Culture was created in 1998 to be an instrument of Inter-American integration in the cultural sphere, to contribute to the peoples of the American continent knowing each other better respecting its national and regional diversity as well as highlighting their shared cultural heritage, and to promote the cities nominated as the American Capital of Culture in the American hemisphere.

These are some cities awarded as American Capital of Culture, Mexico’s Merida (2000), Brazil’s Maceió (2002), Panama’s Panama City (2003), Argentina’s Cordoba (2006), Peru’s Cusco (2007), Paraguay’s Asunción (2009) and Dominican Republic’s Santo Domingo (2010).
