What happened in Cuzco as a result of El Niño opens a new page on the behavior of this global phenomenon that has caused so much damage to Peru in recent decades.
According to Percy Mosca, a specialist of the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi), this is perhaps a new "presentation" of this climatic anomaly. "Usually, and according to previous patterns, El Niño was presented with torrential rains in the north and drought in the south, but this time he has performed with heavy rains in central and southern regions (Cusco, Ayacucho and Puno), and with a magnitude greater than previous years.
He noted that El Nino has caused the excessive rainfall in six provinces of Cuzco. For example, in Sichuan rained for three days what should fall within a month. The same happened in Urubamba, Kayra Farm, Anta. Pomacanchi, Yauri and Pisac.
Rains continue
But in the coming months the rains will stop hitting the southeastern area and focus on the center, said the expert. "The rain will continue through March and April. The expectation is that the rains are diminishing in intensity and focus on the central part of the country, such as Junin and Pasco.
In another tone, said it is likely that these unusual rains recur in Cuzco and in other regions. A sample of this is the precipitation that fell on Caballococha in Iquitos.
"There, in a single day, it rained 100 mm, and in Cusco that number fell to three. This means that these abnormalities can occur in other regions of the country, "he said, and also noted that some of the areas that would be affected and that the authorities should take into account are the upper parts of Ancash, Huanuco, Ucayali, and part Central Selva Alta.
Moreover, according to the World Meteorological Organization, El Niño has become mild. Now we can only hope that this did not hurt us in the north.
